About the Ministry for Regulation
The Ministry for Regulation is a small government agency with a big job to do.
We’re focused on lifting quality across all regulatory systems and supporting agencies with regulatory responsibilities to align with good practice. We want it to be easier for businesses to innovate, grow and comply, while still ensuring the benefits from regulation that we take for granted won’t change.
We are a small group of dedicated professionals, working in a 'can do' environment.
About the Team
The Policy business group is a dynamic and proactive advisory group that provides strategic guidance to the government. They oversee and manage the regulatory framework, offering valuable advice to enhance and improve laws and regulations. The Economics Team, part of this business group, collaborates across the Ministry to deliver insightful economic analysis and recommendations to inform decision-making.
About the Role
We’re seeking a talented individual with strong analytical skills and a passion for applying economic thinking to real-world issues.
You’ll dive into complex issues, providing robust economic analysis on the quality and effects of regulation and bring economic theory to life for industries, markets, and regulatory systems. Your clear communication will be key, as you prepare detailed reports for all audiences and collaborate with internal and external partners to evaluate policy.
In addition to the above, as a Senior Economist, you will independently undertake economic and econometric modelling and use your strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to foster productive working relationships.
About you
You'll need a postgraduate degree in economics, a strong understanding of microeconomics, experience applying economic thinking to policy or regulatory problems, and confidence using quantitative data to conduct economic analysis. Excellent data hygiene, strong written and verbal communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to quickly understand new market and regulatory areas are essential. An understanding of the machinery of government is a bonus.
Whether you're an experienced professional ready to step into a senior role, or an early-career economist seeking your next challenge, we want to hear from you. We’ll appoint at the level that matches your skills and experience.
What we can offer you
- The opportunity to influence regulatory policy and public sector management
- Direct involvement in a new central agency
- A supportive team valuing diversity of thought and knowledge sharing
- Ability to apply economics to interesting regulatory issues
- Flexible working options.
