The Advisor, Reviews and System Capability is a permanent full-time role within the Reviews and System Capability Group, based in central Wellington.
About the Ministry for Regulation
The Ministry for Regulation is a newly established small government agency with a big job to do.
We're here to improve the quality of regulation so all New Zealanders can flourish. We lead the regulatory management system (the set of policies, institutions, processes and tools employed by central government to pursue and maintain good quality regulation) and contribute to the design and operation of individual regulatory systems.
We are a small group of dedicated professionals, working in a 'can do' environment.
About the role
This role is ideal for someone looking to step into their first advisor role in a supportive, collaborative systems thinking environment. You’ll be supported to build core advisory skills while working on real, system level issues that matter. We’re looking for someone with strong foundations, curiosity, and the ability to learn quickly.
In this role, you will join a small, smart, future-focused and passionate team, committed to creating system-level impact. We work collaboratively to lift the capability of those who design, deliver, and govern regulation, removing systemic obstacles and enabling good practice.
You will
Support and contribute to initiatives that enhance regulatory system capability
Assist in the development of resources that strengthen regulatory practice and leadership
Collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders to understand how stronger regulatory systems and better regulatory decisions can be achieved
Support data analysis and insights to inform advice and decision making
Coordinate the team’s work by organising meetings, schedules, information, and follow up across projects.
About you
You’re a pragmatic problem-solver with a curious mind. You enjoy designing your own approach to a task, working through ambiguity, and distilling complex material into something people can understand and use.
You care about improving how government works. You understand the value of lifting regulatory capability at a system level and know that lasting change often begins with small, strategic interventions.
You will bring
A relevant tertiary qualification and at least two years’ work experience
A strong interest in areas such as law, public administration, social sciences or humanities, systems thinking, or creative problem‑solving, developed through study, work, or other diverse experience.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate complex information into practical, actionable advice
Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships and collaborate effectively
Sound judgement, curiosity, and a proactive approach
Clear and effective communication skills, both written and verbal
An understanding of, and commitment to, the impact regulation has on the lives of New Zealanders.
